Why you really need a GHIC for your next European adventure

Don’t forget your GHIC card. This free UK health card ensures fair access to essential medical care abroad - perfect for conscious, budget-friendly travellers. Here’s why it belongs in every responsible travel kit.

Planning your next European adventure? Whether you’re off for a weekend in Lisbon, interrailing through Italy, or volunteering in rural France, there’s one essential item that should always be in your bag (besides your passport): the GHIC card – also known as the UK Global Health Insurance Card.

It might not be as exciting as your hiking boots or festival tickets, but this little card can save you serious stress and money,  if things go wrong abroad.

What is a GHIC card?

The GHIC (Global Health Insurance Card) replaced the EHIC after Brexit. It gives UK residents access to state-provided healthcare in EU countries (plus a few others, like Switzerland and Australia) at the same cost as locals.

That means if you need emergency medical treatment in Europe, you won’t be charged extra just because you’re a visitor.

What does the GHIC cover?

  • Emergency medical treatment
  • Ongoing care for chronic or pre-existing conditions
  • Routine maternity care (not planned births)
  • Dialysis or oxygen (with advance arrangement)

Important to remember: The GHIC isn’t the same as private health insurance. It won’t cover every situation or all costs,  but it makes sure you get fair access to essential care.

Do I still need travel insurance with a GHIC?

Yes, 100%. While the GHIC helps with medical costs, it won’t cover:

  • Repatriation back to the UK
  • Private medical treatment
  • Lost luggage
  • Flight delays or cancellations

That’s why pairing your GHIC with reliable travel insurance is a sensible move. Together, they give you complete peace of mind.

Tip: Our Freedom and OK To Travel policies encourage you to use your GHIC. In some cases, it can reduce or remove the policy excess on medical claims,  meaning fewer out-of-pocket costs for you.

How to apply for a GHIC:

Getting your GHIC is quick, easy, and completely free when you apply through the official NHS website.

  • Visit NHS GHIC application page
  • Fill in your details and prove UK residency
  • Apply for each traveller in your group
  • Your GHIC will arrive in around 7–10 days
  • It’s valid for 5 years

Watch out for unofficial websites that charge you – they’re unnecessary. The real GHIC is 100% free.

Tip: Snap a photo of your card and save it to your phone, just in case. And if you forget it, you can contact the NHS for a Provisional Replacement Certificate (PRC) while you’re abroad.

Why every responsible traveller needs a GHIC in 2025

Let’s face it – travel comes with unknowns. And while we love the adventure, it’s good to be covered for the unexpected.

By carrying a GHIC card, you’re not just protecting your health – you’re also avoiding unnecessary costs and helping reduce strain on international healthcare systems by accessing care responsibly.

So before you jump on that flight, bus, or train across Europe, make sure you’ve applied for your GHIC card. It's a small step that makes a big difference to your trip – and your peace of mind!
