Working towards B Corp Certification

One of the biggest objectives we have set ourselves, with the launch of One Tree Travel, is to become B Corp certified. Through these blog posts, we are looking forward to updating our customers and business partners on our progress.

What is B Corp certification?

B Corp Certification is awarded to companies that meet the highest standards of social and environmental performance, transparency, and accountability. Pursuing B Corp Certification aligns with our commitment to have a positive impact on our community and the environment.

B Corp Certification also fills a gap for small and medium-sized businesses like ours. Whereas most corporate sustainability reporting standards are designed for large organisations with extensive staff and resources, B Corp offers a manageable solution for companies not operating at that scale.

Off to a good start: Green Business Impact Programme

To start the B Corp journey, companies undergo a comprehensive B impact assessment that identifies how a business’s activities affect its stakeholders. The good news for us is that in our region, Cambridgeshire, qualifying SMEs can access support via the Green Business Impact Programme (GBIP), a mentoring programme designed to help organisations to understand their current carbon emissions, identify activities to reduce carbon emissions and use this information to develop a 5-year Net Zero roadmap.

Earlier this month, Freedom Insurance Services received approval to join the programme and, on Monday, we had our first meeting with the friendly team at Peterborough Environment City Trust (PECT) who talked us through the first steps towards measuring our current carbon impact.

Next week, we’ll update you on what we learnt at ‘Becoming B-Corp’, an event hosted by the Cambridge Network that we are attending tomorrow!
